THE TECHNOLOGY

Our team has solved the turning dilemma with an entirely new concept. It has 4 underlying key requirements:

First of all, reliable object recognition during all weather and sight conditions, even with fog, darkness or bright backlight. 

Secondly, intuitive notification in case of obstacles, like a sixth sense, that works even with closed eyes and surrounding noise. 

Third, a cost-effective implementation appropriate to the boat value. 

And fourth, simple installation and no impact on boat or rowing movement.

The result of careful evaluation of these requirements is our two component system, for which a patent application has been filed. Simple and robust on the outside, precise and sophisticated technology on the inside.

An infrared laser (LiDAR) allows reliable obstacle detection. Data is analyzed by a high-performance microcomputer. Collision risk is evaluated and vibration commands are sent to the chestbelt via bluetooth. Li-ion batteries offer enough power for several hours of use. The unit is compact, robust, waterproof and weighs less than a small bottle of water.

The chest belt can be comfortably worn like a heart rate measurement belt and offers an immediate, intuitive sense for direction. It consists of an array of vibration motors that are arranged on the rower’s back. On the chest there is nothing to disturb the rowing movement. Position and frequency of the vibration signal clearly indicate how much steering is necessary. Light li-polymer batteries allow long durations of use.
